For International Readers: Children’s Rights and Religious Upbringing in Japan
In December 2022, the Japanese government issued official guidelines on child abuse related to religious beliefs. These guidelines marked an important turning point by clarifying when religious upbringing and practices may constitute child abuse. They emphasized that children’s safety, well-being, and rights must take priority, even when harmful practices are justified by religious beliefs.
These developments have significantly raised public awareness in Japan of the human rights of children raised in religious communities, often referred to as “second-generation believers.” Issues that had long remained within families and religious organizations are now being examined from the perspectives of children’s rights, education, healthcare, and freedom of conscience.
We believe Japan’s experience offers valuable insights for child protection professionals, social workers, educators, and others supporting children around the world.
This website collects and shares official documents, academic research, legal developments, and historical records concerning Jehovah’s Witnesses. Our aim is not to criticize religious belief itself, but to contribute to informed discussion and the protection of children’s rights through reliable, evidence-based information. Our purpose is not to promote hatred or persecution, nor to engage in criticism for its own sake.
